Deidre LaCarte is a Canadian artist,
and computer nerd known for abstract and stimulating visual work.
Born and raised in British Columbia,
Deidre attended Vancouver Island University, studying Visual Arts and Computers.
She coded the first moving GIF through Geocities to a track from Robin Hood which launched Hampsterdance.com.
This site was the first to go viral and was featured in a number of Hollywood movies and gained global recognition. The website was in tribute to her inner child and her pet hamster, Hampton.
After a car accident the summer of 2019 left her hands unable to 3D art she turned to paint and markers and adapted tools to do limited work with soapstone.
Her way of painting is cited as “Smush Painting”. Using a limited palate, and a random application of paint, she “Smushes” another canvas on top, creating a mirror image. She then highlights with markers different textures, shades and hues with no preplanning of the end result.
“Realism doesn’t work as I can’t draw a stick figure, but I find things in the canvas that want to be seen
Through painting and adaptive sculpting, Deidre explores how art can soothe our mental health, often diving into the complexity of the human condition.
Through Inner Child Creations, and channeling her inner painter, Delchinnii, she continues to work on speaking to her inner child and healing mind and body.
She hopes that her work will inspire others to never lose their sense of playfulness and creativity and that past trauma can be soothed through art.
Deidre now spends her time in her studio in Liverpool, NS, with her cat PicCatzo.
You can find her work on the Facebook group, art.by.delchinnii. and at the soon to be relaunched for its 25th Anniversary, Hamsterdance.ca
