Art show: Timothy Gillespie – Cellulosity @ The Astor Theatre
Jun 7 @ 6:00 pm – Jun 29 @ 4:00 pm

Join us throughout the month of June for Timothy Gillespie’s latest solo exhibition, Cellulosity. The opening reception will take place on Friday June 7th at 6-8pm.

In his newest work, Timothy Gillespie shows his current version of the plastic arts in works employing industrial cellulose and assorted detritus from the day-to-day world.

The gallery is open Wednesday to Saturday from 11am to 4pm.

About the artist:
Timothy Gillespie is a Winnipeg native who operates South Coast Studio, where he works in a variety of media in sculptures and wall pieces, featuring steel and a variety of cellulose iterations and including industrial elements.

Gillespie previously operated the Folk, Fine & Funky Gallery at Sable River and the Waterfront Gallery in nearby Shelburne, both of which featured exclusively work by Nova Scotia artists. He co-founded the Shelburne County Arts Council and Osprey Arts Centre and was appointed by the Premier as the inaugural chair of the Nova Scotia Arts Partnership Council.

For five years, he produced the popular Waterfront Jazz Festival and later produced the Friday Night Hootenanny series for five years, both on Shelburne’s waterfront.

In Queens County, Gillespie was among the group of artists who recently formed an arts and crafts society, which sponsors the annual Queens Coast Art Tour, now scheduled for June 22 and 23.
Gillespie’s work has been shown in solo and group shows in California, Toronto and Nova Scotia.

The Great Escaper @ The Astor Theatre
Jul 3 @ 2:30 pm

Showtimes: Wednesday July 3rd, 2:30pm & 7pm  |  Thursday July 4th, 2:30pm & 7pm

In the summer of 2014, Bernard Jordan (Michael Caine) made global headlines. He had staged a “great escape” from his care home to join fellow war veterans on a beach in Normandy, commemorating their fallen comrades at the D-Day Landings 70th anniversary.

It was a story that captured the imagination of the world as Bernie embodied the defiant, “can-do” spirit of a generation that was fast disappearing.

Bernie’s adventure, spanning a mere 48 hours, also marked the culmination of his 60-year marriage to Rene (Glenda Jackson) – THE GREAT ESCAPER celebrates their enduring love but always with an eye to the lessons we might learn from the Greatest Generation.
