South Shore Summer Theatre – PIPPIN @ The Astor Theatre Liverpool
Aug 16 @ 7:30 pm

The South Shore Summer Theatre returns to the Astor again this year with their performance of the hit Broadway musical Pippin!

As told by a traveling troupe of actors led by the cunning and charming Leading Player, Pippin is the story of a young prince, heir to the throne, who is searching for his own “corner of the sky.” Pippin returns from university certain that he will find a fulfilling purpose in life. As encouraged by the Leading Player, Pippin dabbles in bloody battle, licentious and lusty sexual entanglements, and saavy political maneuvers, only to discover that true happiness is more complicated than he thought. With infectious tunes by Stephen Schwartz and classic choreography from Bob Fosse, Pippin is both a humorous allegory about growing up and a dark tale of the danger of false appearances and empty promises.

The Moulettes @ The Astor Theatre Liverpool
Oct 8 @ 7:30 pm

Trying to describe Moulettes is a lot harder than loving their music is. Often compared to artists as diverse as Pink Floyd and Kate Bush, this group continues to push the boundaries of acoustic, and sometimes electric contemporary songwriting and instrumentation. What is consistent in every recording they have made is a combination of lush, catchy melodies, ethereal lyrics and a unique sound that blends folk and pop with strings. On this Canadian tour, Moulettes will be heavily featuring strings from their current project, Xenolalia. This show is guaranteed to turn heads and win over audiences.

We love presenting new acts to our audience, and are thrilled that Moulettes, from the UK, have chosen to include the Astor in their Canada tour!

The Knitting Pilgrim @ The Astor Theatre Liverpool
Oct 19 @ 7:30 pm

Come see The Knitting Pilgrim at The Astor Theatre, Thursday October 19th, 7:30pm

Interview with Kirk Dunn on QCCR:

Actor, writer and knitter Kirk Dunn will be presenting his multidisciplinary one-man show, The Knitting Pilgrim, featuring the Stitched Glass tapestries, at The Astor Theatre, Thursday October 19th, 7:30pm. The show, which theatre critic Lynn Slotkin called “a stunning piece of theatre… glorious and so moving,” combines personal storytelling, image projection and three huge knitted panels, designed in the style of stained-glass windows, that look at the commonalities and conflicts of the Abrahamic Faiths: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. It recounts Kirk’s 15-year artistic and spiritual journey handknitting the ambitious project, and looks at why the faiths struggle to get along today, the meaning of art, the hell of grant-writing and the power of love to overcome major obstacles (and minor mishaps). The show premiered at the Aga Khan Museum in 2019, and has been performed over 55 times across Ontario to acclaim, with a tour in Austria and Germany in the summer of 2023.

Murray McLauchlan – Hourglass Tour @ The Astor Theatre Liverpool
Oct 24 @ 7:30 pm
Murray McLauchlan is one of Canada’s most highly regarded singer/songwriters, and with good cause. Over a 50-year career, he has released 20 albums and been awarded 11 Junos. His songs Farmer’s Song, Down by the Henry Moore, Whispering Rain and Sweeping the Spotlight Away are now considered Canadian standards. Murray is also a painter, an author, an actor, a radio host; he’s been bestowed an Honourary Doctor of Laws and appointed to The Order of Canada. That’s quite a ride.
For many years Murray’s touring had been restricted to Lunch At Allen’s, whose members also include Ian Thomas, Marc Jordan and Cindy Church. But with the release of his critically acclaimed Hourglass, he’s back on the road treating concert goers to a seamless blend of old and new.
Here’s what he has to say: “As a songwriter I know that it’s not enough to sit in your kitchen and write. Your songs need to be heard. Music is a communicative art and if it isn’t brought in front of people there is no way to tell if that end has been met. I like to think of a concert tour as a kind of roving gallery to test your art and your ideas. I try to do my very best to make it worthwhile for folks to be there and to perhaps look at things in a new way when they leave.”
And this, in a nutshell, is the Murray McLauchlan concert experience.
Reserved seating tickets for Murray McLauchlan …Hourglass are $66 (all taxes and fees included), go on sale Friday, June 9 and are available from the Astor Theatre box office or online. Showtime is 7:30pm. For more info, pics & music clips, visit www.shantero.com or www.murraymclauchlan.com

Chantal Kreviazuk, a two-time JUNO Award winner and Raine Maida — a four-time winner with Our Lady Peace — are one of Canada’s most influential cultural couples.

Kreviazuk made her critically acclaimed full-length debut, Under These Rocks and Stones, in 1997. Since then, the Winnipeg born singer-songwriter has released five more studio albums, and garnered five JUNO Award nominations. The pair has also co-written countless hits for artists such as Kelly Clarkson, David Cook and Carrie Underwood.

While Kreviazuk and Maida are quick to lend their time to the studio and stage, they are equally committed to lending their help to those in need — both in Canada and internationally. In March, the couple received the 2014 Allan Waters Humanitarian Award that recognizing outstanding Canadian artists whose contributions have positively enhanced the social fabric of Canada.

“Not only am I able to express myself, and be able to play music for others and be creative for a living in life, but I can go to the next level and be a part of true greatness — the process of another human being’s healing, possibly playing even a small role in improving the quality of life of another,” Kreviazuk said.

War Child Canada is one of the many organizations the married couple has embraced. Kreviazuk is an honourary founder and active in various causes including women’s rights, war refugees and child education. Maida launched War Child’s Busking for Change program, in which Canadian musicians have raised money for children in the world’s most devastated regions, supporting initiatives such as the construction of schools in the Congo. Additionally the couple has recorded contributions for multiple benefit albums for War Child.

“I was first drawn to music because of the inherent ‘hope’ it provided me,” Maida said. “Social activism carries that same promise and the two together have shaped and taught me more than I could ever repay.”

Ron James – Not Nearly Done Yet! @ The Astor Theatre Liverpool
Nov 14 @ 7:30 pm

With twenty-five years spent barrelling down endless strips of asphalt from coast to coast, RON JAMES, our nation’s number one road warrior and newly minted senior citizen, is ‘Not Nearly Done Yet’! With his trademark poetically charged alliterative rants, performed with razor sharp timing, this award-winning comedian and best-selling author takes audiences on a marathon roller coaster ride in the language of laughs, charting a course through a politically polarized world out of whack. From the micro to macro, he tackles everything from the dating woes of Baby Boomers, embattled public health care, aging parents, food fads, exercise addiction, nostalgia, information overload, tropical vacations gone awry, New Age divas, homelessness crisis, climate change, corporate monopolies and gambling ads in hockey, to the rise of AI’s robot revolution. The comedian the Globe and Mail called, ‘a man of a million words and a million laughs’, contemplates what really matters most in a culture beset by runaway consumption… and it is us. The preservation of humanity’s humanity. ‘Everything else is just a spoiler on a Dodge Neon’.

“hysterically funny … at the top of his game” – Toronto Star
