Rawlins Cross – Sunrise Tour @ Astor Theatre
Oct 30 @ 7:30 pm

Canadian Celtic-rock group Rawlins Cross are a legendary East Coast act. Since forming in the late 80s, the band has been fusing Celtic traditional music with rock, pop and worldbeat music.  With 11 commercial recordings to their credit, including the gold-selling Reel ‘n’ Roll (1993), the band has earned multiple JUNO nominations and won nine East Coast Music Awards. Over the years, Rawlins Cross has toured extensively on three continents including a performance representing Canada at the Summit of the Americas in Santiago, Chile and a nationally-televised Canada Day performance on Parliament Hill in Ottawa and a command performance for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.  The band is equally at ease with a soulful Highland Air (“MacPherson’s Lament“) or a raucous party song (“Colleen“, “Wild Rose“, “Reel ‘n’ Roll“) captivating their faithful fans.  Rawlins Cross is hitting stages once again to promote their latest release, Sunrise (2022).

On Sunday 30th October they will be back at The Astor!

Ashley MacIsaac with special guest Roland Grant @ The Astor Theatre
Nov 12 @ 7:30 pm

Ashley MacIsaac is a musician and storyteller who needs little introduction, having delighted audiences around the globe for decades. Born in Creignish, on the western side of Cape Breton, by the time he started school, he was performing as a dancer in concerts, graduating to fiddle and piano a short time later.  Before he graduated high school, he was playing across North America, including playing and dancing in a Phillip Glass off-Broadway production.  Over the years, he has experimented with musical styles, evolving into an award-winning genre bending performer, writer, and singer who has toured and performed for sellout crowds around the world, including the 2010 Winter Olympic opening ceremonies.

Opening the show for Ashley is the newest guitar sensation in these parts: Roland Grant. This Canadian guitar virtuoso, vocalist, and composer is garnering renown for ceaselessly bringing audiences to their feet. With a uniquely individual style incorporating rock with flamenco and Latin influences, he brings his showmanship to the stage with a stellar band. Recent appearances include the 10,500 seat ScotiaBank Centre along with numerous theatres, festivals, and music clubs.

These two outstanding musicians are appearing together for the first time, here on the Astor stage, and we couldn’t be more thrilled. Both energetic masters of their instruments, it will be a night to remember!

Doors open at 7pm, show at 7:30. Tickets are $40

Derek Edwards – In Praise of the Ostrich @ Astor Theatre
Nov 13 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm

With ‘In Praise of the Ostrich’  Derek Edwards  moseys back into town on horse-drawn comedy wagon; a searing meander down life’s twisting trails, steered effortfully by this 30-year veteran. He returns with a payload of blissfully funny personal stories – a cacophony of shenanigans – set to tickle the ribs and warm the heart.

With an easy conversational style, Derek reluctantly pulls his head out of the sand and launches into commentary on the influx of pot stores, self-driving cars, gambling tips, the challenge of staying youthful … plus dressing warm.

From Vegas to St. John’s, this Just For Laughs veteran is universally considered to be among the comic elite.  Certainly his peers think so, as evidenced by the fact that he’s a four-time nominee, and winner of Best Standup Comic – Canadian Comedy Awards, as well as a multiple Gemini nominee for Best Performance in a Comedy.  As Rick Mercer says, “Everyone knows Derek is the funniest man in Canada.”

Clearly the critics agree: “5 STARS – the funniest man on earth” – Winnipeg Free Press; “4 STARS –  the crowd howled” – Victoria Times Colonist; “still the funniest man in Canada” – Toronto Sun; “Edwards reigns as the King of Canadian comedy” – Charlottetown Guardian; “Derek Edwards is hysterical” – Calgary Sun; “Edwards takes stand-up to next stage” – Georgia Straight; “the epitome of timing & storytelling” – Halifax Chronicle Herald; “the comedian’s comedian” – London Free Press.

‘In Praise of the Ostrich’  – Derek Edwards’ new 90-minute stand-up comedy show …a richly textured and enthralling ‘cut above,’ delivered with pace and authority by the consummate Canadian Comedian. Down to earth, lots of laughs, wagons ho.

Catherine MacLellan Christmas Show @ The Astor Theatre
Dec 11 @ 7:30 pm

JUNO Award-winning singer-songwriter Catherine MacLellan is bringing her Christmas Show to the Maritimes this year. Sharing beloved classics, self-penned holiday songs and some rare gems, Catherine will be joined on stage by her long-time guitarist Nick Gauthier as well as Tanya Davis.

Catherine says, “I’ve always loved the music of Christmas, and the fun times singing in kitchens with friends and family over a glass of eggnog. That is the energy I’ll be bringing with me, hoping that people sing along and catch some of that holiday spirit!”

Last year, Catherine released her first Christmas album, a self-engineered and self-produced EP, which includes the original single (“Calling You Home (for the Holidays)”) and three beloved classics (“In The Bleak Midwinter”, “Blue Christmas”, and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”).

I love the coziness of winter, it’s a time for introspection but also a time for gathering around fires and feasts. Christmas shows bring in all of that for me, the balance between joyful silliness and the sacred. It makes me feel like a child again,” says Catherine.

Pinot & Augustine – clown duo @ The Astor Theatre
Dec 17 @ 3:00 pm

A sure-fire 45-minute, bilingual, crowd-pleaser, PINOT & AUGUSTINE is a classic, family-friendly clown duo inspired by the golden age of Circus. Pinot is the authoritarian clown in fancy clothes and white cone hat. Augustine is the appealing red-nosed bumbler who punctures his pomposity. Their show bubbles over with physical comedy, virtuosity and musical surprises from the sublime to the ridiculous: from lyrical melodies on a musical saw to pratfalls and a whoopee cushion.

“If you’d like or need to be reminded of the pure and simple joy of life, PINOT & AUGUSTINE will do the trick.

Their show is pure entertainment, clean and fresh fun…The Most Adorable Show in the World!”                                                                                                                                   – DC Metro Theatre Arts

HAPPENSTANCE THEATER is an award-winning, professional company committed to devising, producing and touring original, performer-created visual, poetic Theater. With the simplest means – movement, silence, theatrical clown, music, text, physical comedy and beauty – we seek to elevate the moment when the performers and audience meet, to lift the encounter beyond the daily and pedestrian into the realms of dreams, poetry, and art. Meaning is often discovered by happenstance.

Maxim & Gervais Cormier + Sam Wilson & Gabriella Ciurcovich

Maxim Cormier is one of Canada’s most decorated musicians, known to audiences both as a “genre-defying guitar virtuoso” and an award-winning composer. With training in classical, jazz, and world music, Cormier strives to reimagine what guitar mastery can sound like. Praise has come from critics including the CBC’s Bob Mersereau, who hailed Cormier’s unconventional flat-pick, steel-string interpretation of Bach as “not just a worthy experiment… [but] a revelation.”

Guitarist Sam Wilson oscillates between the worlds of improvisation and composition. From solo to quintet, she presents a performance that reflects her love of jazz, improvised and instrumental music stemming from various traditions. Her debut album Groundless Apprehensions, released in 2019, received nominations from the ECMAs and Music Nova Scotia for ‘Jazz recording of the year’. Her follow up solo guitar album, Into a Heart (pt. II) released on Muzak records in Japan, and independently to the rest of the world, won the 2022 Music Nova Scotia  Jazz Recording of the Year

This is a FREE event presented by the TD Halifax Jazz Festival! General admission. The doors will open at 7 with the show starting at 7:30pm.
