Capella Regalis Men & Boys Choir @ Trinity Anglican Church
May 24 @ 7:00 pm

The Astor Theatre is pleased to present this special choral performance at The Trinity Anglican Church, in partnership with Musique Royale.

Capella Regalis Men and Boys Choir, founded in Nova Scotia by Nick Halley in 2010, builds upon the best aspects of the centuries-old European tradition of men and boys church choirs. While Canada was once rich with such choirs, Capella Regalis is one of only a handful of men and boys choirs in Canada today. Capella Regalis has released three CDs: Love Came Down: Carols for Christmas (2019), Greater Love (2017) and My Eyes for Beauty Pine (2014).

The concert will highlight favourites from the sacred and secular choral canon.

Tickets are available through The Astor box office or online from Ticketpro and are priced at $25 in advance or $30 on the day of the show.

The concert will take place at the Trinity Anglican Church – doors open at 6:30 and seating is general, so arrive early to claim your seat.

Jimmy Rankin’s Kitchen Party – Spring 2022 Edition @ Astor Theatre
May 28 @ 7:30 pm

Just at a time when people are searching out authentic cultural voices, who tell strong stories and write well-crafted songs, Rankin has made an unapologetically East Coast folk-rock record. It’s his take on what it means to live and breathe Maritime tradition, culture and music, but with a raw, unsentimental and current edge. “I’m putting the party back in the kitchen” quips Rankin.

It’s called Moving East because that’s exactly what Jimmy’s done. He’s moved back to Nova Scotia after seven years living and working in Nashville. Hooking up with fellow Nova Scotian Joel Plaskett as producer, he’s made an album appealing to young and old alike, with songs running the gamut from gritty pub tunes to soulful ballads all featuring great storytelling, and fine songwriting.

Join Jimmy and his selected guests when he brings his Kitchen Party to Liverpool on May 28th.

Tickets are $40 and go on sale on Friday February 4th at 11am in the box office and online.

Documentary: Meeting the Beatles in India, including Q&A with Director Paul Saltzman @ Astor Theatre
Jun 10 @ 7:00 pm

Filmmaker Paul Saltzman retraces his journey of 50 years ago when he spent a life-changing time with the Beatles at the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram on the banks of the Ganges River. In 1968, he discovered his own soul, learned meditation, which changed his life, and hung out with John, Paul, George and Ringo. Fifty years later, he finds ‘Bungalow Bill’ in Hawaii; connects with David Lynch about his own inner journey; as well as preeminent Beatles historian, Mark Lewisohn; Academy Award nominated film composer, Laurence Rosenthal; and Pattie and Jenny Boyd. And much of this is due to Saltzman’s own daughter, Devyani, reminding him that he had put away and forgotten these remarkably intimate photographs of that time in 1968.

Narration: Morgan Freeman
Executive Producer: David Lynch (among others)

Director Paul Saltzman will be joining us in Liverpool on June 10th for a very special meet & greet and question and answer session. He will be bringing with him a selection of photographic cards and souvenir photo books available for purchase.

The bar will be open for this special event, so join us for a fun social evening of hearing about Paul’s unique experiences with the Beatles in the 1960s.

Garrett Mason with Campbell & Johnston @ The Astor Theatre
Sep 15 @ 7:30 pm

Garrett Mason has been a bluesman since childhood. Raised in Truro, Nova Scotia, and playing his brand of blues all over Canada for over 20 years, Mason is known across the nation as one of, if not the best guitarists in the country. But don’t let the fancy fingers distract you too much; the guy can sing his butt off too. Blending blues, jazz, rock, soul, and country, since going solo some years back, Garrett is truly one of the most unique voices in Nova Scotia’s rich music scene.

Award winning Halifax Blues-Rock power duo, Christine Campbell & Blake Johnston have been building a name for themselves. Entertaining audiences with their soulful tone, 60’s & 70s rock style guitar riffs & bewitching vocal harmonies, opening up for some big names, like Burton Cummings, Steve Earle & Bob Seger.

In 2021, they released their new self-titled EP, Campbell & Johnston’s Black Market Band. This new record, produced by Johnston himself, adds a touch of their old school rock influences with a modern twist on blues and soul. The record went on to be nominated for “Blues Recording of the Year” by Music Nova Scotia & WINNER of the 2022 East Coast Music Award for “Blues Recording of the Year”.

An Evening with Sarah Harmer – Are You Gone Tour @ Astor Theatre
Sep 27 @ 7:30 pm

Award-winning, platinum-selling musician Sarah Harmer makes a much-anticipated return to the stage in support of her 2020 album, Are You Gone.

Harmer’s sixth album and first in a decade, Are You Gone is a deeply personal and political collection of songs motivated by the beauty of life, the urgency of the climate crisis, and the question of loss. She calls it a spiritual successor of sorts to her acclaimed 2000 debut, You Were Here, which TIME called the year’s best debut album. Nearly 20 years after that release, Are You Gone brought a close to Harmer’s period of musical quietude with a rousing artistic statement, rich in detail and emotion, from the heart and for the spirit.

Harmer has been nominated for the Polaris Music Prize, garnered two JUNO Awards, and been widely praised for her “razor-sharp songwriting chops” (NPR Music) and “plainly hooky” melodic sensibility (Rolling Stone).

The Stampeders – Celebrating 50 Years! @ Astor Theatre
Oct 17 @ 7:30 pm

THE STAMPEDERS ~ IN CONCERT

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS

‘They’re on their way, to the city lights’ … and, THE predominant Canadian Rock ‘n’ Roll band of the 1970s – The Stampeders – are bringing along all their classic hits: Wild Eyes, Carry Me, Oh My Lady, Devil You, Monday Morning Choo Choo, Minstrel Gypsy, Hit the Road Jack and, of course, the quintessential Canadian – and Hall of Fame – song, Sweet City Woman! A veritable soundtrack to a whole generation that will ‘carry you home’ … maybe not to Birmingham … but back to a time of tie-dyed t-shirts and elevator shoes, 15¢ coffee and homemade apple pie, dating and dreaming … By the time The Stampeders get to the first chorus of the first song, everyone will be singing along.

No seventies group represented Canada’s musical identity to the world like The Stampeders. A quick look at Canada’s music scene from 1971 until 1976 confirms The Stampeders were truly the country’s international musical ambassadors, touring more extensively in Canada and overseas than any other Canadian group during that time.  In 1977 the trio: Rich Dodson (lead guitar), Kim Berly (drums) and Ronnie King (bass) parted company but reunited, fittingly at the Calgary Stampede, 15 years later in 1992. Since then they’ve been recognized by SOCAN for their Lifetime Achievement, been inducted into the SOCAN Songwriters Hall of Fame on five occasions and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame for their 1971 seminal hit Sweet City Woman.

The enduring musical legacy of The Stampeders, celebrating 50 years… ‘better catch a noon train, better get there for a rock ‘n’ rolling good time!’
