The Stadacona Band of the Royal Canadian Navy presents the Beary Merry Concert in support of The Salvation Army’s Christmas assistance program. Joining The Stadacona Band is CTV’s Liz Rigney as they entertain the audience with a variety of holiday tunes.

For over twenty years, The Stadacona Band has presented this concert to helps families make ends meet over the holidays. In tradition, concert-goers bring along a teddy bear for donation to children in need, if they are able. What began as a simple tradition has amassed into a holiday showcase that helps relieve families from the decision of delaying payment on a bill or buying a Christmas gift for their child.

The Beary Merry has become a holiday favourite for both the young and old. Join The Salvation Army at the Astor Theatre December 14 at 7pm for an evening of great music.

All toys donated will be distributed to children right here in Liverpool.

The Beary Merry Christmas concert series, an annual holiday tradition in the Maritimes. The event also encouraged patrons to donate a new toy for The Salvation Army’s annual Christmas assistance. This program provides Christmas hampers with food for a Christmas dinner and gifts to go under the tree for children, providing a Christmas experience that would be absent without this support. Every year, The Salvation Army helps thousands of children in the Maritimes through this program.

In past years, at the Halifax concerts alone, more than 1,200 stuffed animals and toys were donated. Major Brenda Bungay, director of Community and Family Services Halifax, says that the Beary Merry’s history and reputation resonate with the community.

“People’s need for assistance from The Salvation Army at Christmas is great and the Beary Merry concerts are a big help to our work because even the smallest donation of a bear, stuffed animal or other toy can bring joy to a child,” she says. “Seeing kids receiving these toys makes Christmas for me.”
