The Astor Theatre to Remain Closed until September 1, 2020

Covid-19 Update

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 4, 2020

LIVERPOOL, NS — The historic Astor Theatre in Liverpool, Nova Scotia, will remain closed for the spring and summer, the theatre’s board of directors announced today in response to ongoing precautions around the COVID-19 pandemic.

All events planned for the theatre up to Sept. 1 have been either cancelled or re-scheduled. The annual summer theatre camp has also been cancelled for this year. Any tickets for live events that patrons have purchased will be valid for the re-scheduled date.

The board made these difficult decisions to respect the safety of the Astor’s staff, performers and patrons.

Kristopher Snarby, chairman of the Astor Theatre Society, thanked all of the theatre’s staff for their commitment and dedication.

“We also want to thank our community for their ongoing support and we want to assure them that this is only a temporary closure,” Snarby said. “We look forward to reopening when we can.”

The Astor Theatre is the artistic hub of Nova Scotia’s South Shore. Built in 1902 as part of Liverpool’s historic town hall, it was originally known as the Liverpool Opera House. The Astor has hosted a variety of local, national and international events, from the popular Queens County Music Festival and Liverpool International Theatre Festival to concerts featuring Rufus Wainwright and Measha Brueggergosman.

Deck the Halls Art Show & Sale @ Astor Theatre
Dec 10 @ 11:00 am – 4:00 pm

Visual arts arrive at The Astor in Liverpool with the opening of the Deck the Halls art show and sale on December 10. The show features works by Eleven South Shore artists and is the first exhibit launched since the Region of Queens accepted the The Astor Theatre Society’s proposal to manage the Town Hall Arts and Cultural Centre. The Astor Theatre and THACC occupy the former town hall building on Liverpool’s Main Street.

“Since we were awarded management of THACC in September, the Astor Board has completed its vision to integrate programming of the two spaces,” explained Kristopher Snarby, President, Astor Theatre Society.

Opened in 1902, the Astor Theatre is the oldest, continuously operating live performance centre in Nova Scotia, and it remains one of its busiest. In 2019, the Astor has hosted more than 150 events, including live theatre, music and comedy performances, community concerts, movie showings, and the 75th annual Queens County Music Festival. In recent years, two young musical theatre performers have advanced from that Festival to represent Nova Scotia at the National competition.

“Our goal with bringing THACC under the Astor umbrella is to create a vibrant, inclusive centre for the arts, in the heart of Liverpool’s downtown,” said Snarby.

He went on to emphasize that the Astor Theatre Society remains committed to shining a spotlight on talented local performers and creators, as well as bringing interesting artistic experiences to the area.

The Deck the Halls art show takes place in THACC’s main floor and upstairs gallery spaces and features works by Tom Alway, Peter Blais, Marshall Burgess, Matthew Collins, Bev Crouse, Dennis Curran, William Downey, Marilyn Kellough, Marg Millard, Roger Savage and Sharon Wadsworth-Smith. The opening reception for the show is on Wednesday, December 11, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served and a cash (only) bar is available.

Hours for the show are Tuesday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and 3 hours prior to all live performances at the Astor until Christmas, and Tuesday to Friday, January 2 to 10, 2020.
