New Chess Club at the Town Hall Arts and Cultural Centre

Whether you’re an experienced player or completely new to the game, the Astor Chess Club is for you! No matter your age or experience level, all are welcome to join us.

Since putting our posters up last week, an enthusiastic bunch of players have already registered. If you’re interested in joining them just give us a call at the box office (902-354-5250) or email boxoffice@astortheatre.ns.ca and we’ll add you to the list.

Our first meeting will be Thursday March 11th at 3:30 here in the THACC. We will be following all the appropriate COVID-19 protocols to keep everyone safe. We have enough chess sets to go around, and all will be fully sanitized before play, so please don’t worry about bringing your own.

See the attached document for all the club details.

Breath of Fresh Air Youth Theatre Group returns to the Astor stage with Goodbye Kurt Cobain

We are delighted to welcome our local youth theatre group back to the Astor with a play written and directed by Kallie Koliotassis. Two plays, in fact!

The first, titled The One is a spooky tale performed by the younger members of the group:

A group of friends end up at a haunted house, in a room that may or may not actually exist, where they’re faced with a decision that could doom one of them… or all of them.

And the second, Goodbye Kurt Cobain, is sure to bring back memories for many of us:

In 1994, a few weeks after Kurt Cobain’s death, a group of friends decide to meet in the woods to have a little fun. Their buddy Shaun has taken the death of his icon pretty hard, and needs a little cheering up. Over the course of the evening they reflect on the good times they’ve shared, and come to terms with the fact that some things cannot last. Does the end of Kurt Cobain mark the end of their time together?

Tickets ($15 Adults, $10 students) are on sale now at the Astor box office (Tuesday – Friday 10 – 4), in person or over the phone, or online through Ticketpro:

A message from Natalie:  Welcome to our home!! I’m Natalie MacMaster and together with my husband Donnell Leahy and our seven children, we will be celebrating Christmas virtually this year!! For decades, we have toured extensively at Christmas, but this year marks our most unique one, taking the stage to our home! We will spend just over an hour sharing with you much of our music and culture, Christmas traditions and general real life family dynamic in the comfort of our own home!! We are quite excited to play our music for you (which includes the children as well for many of the tunes), do some dancing, some singing, some baking, talk about Christmas memories past and even have our band join us for a couple virtual performances! Given our children’s ages and personalities, there will be many candid moments along the way. I’ve heard it said that every disadvantage creates an opportunity. Well we have embraced this chance to perform for a crowd in such a unique way and are eagerly awaiting the moment you all show up at our front door, ready to welcome you home!

Astor Theatre to remain CLOSED until September 1, 2020

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 4, 2020

LIVERPOOL, NS — The historic Astor Theatre in Liverpool, Nova Scotia, will remain closed for the spring and summer, the theatre’s board of directors announced today in response to ongoing precautions around the COVID-19 pandemic.

All events planned for the theatre up to Sept. 1 have been either cancelled or re-scheduled. The annual summer theatre camp has also been cancelled for this year. Any tickets for live events that patrons have purchased will be valid for the re-scheduled date.

The board made these difficult decisions to respect the safety of the Astor’s staff, performers and patrons.

Kristopher Snarby, chairman of the Astor Theatre Society, thanked all of the theatre’s staff for their commitment and dedication.

“We also want to thank our community for their ongoing support and we want to assure them that this is only a temporary closure,” Snarby said. “We look forward to reopening when we can.”

The Astor Theatre is the artistic hub of Nova Scotia’s South Shore. Built in 1902 as part of Liverpool’s historic town hall, it was originally known as the Liverpool Opera House. The Astor has hosted a variety of local, national and international events, from the popular Queens County Music Festival and Liverpool International Theatre Festival to concerts featuring Rufus Wainwright and Measha Brueggergosman.
